UTI in Pregnancy

evan March 8, 2024

UTI in pregnancy should always be treated even if asymptomatic

First Trimester

  • Trimethoprim should be avoided as it is teratogenic (folate antagonist with can lead to neural tube defects)
  • Nitrofurantoin for 7 days - cefalexin 2nd line

Second Trimester

Third Trimester

  • Nitrofurantoin should be avoided at term due to risk of neonatal haemolysis and therefore cefalexin is the best option here.
