Urea:Creatinine Ratio

evan April 28, 2024

Working out Urea:Creatinine easily

Divide the creatinine by 10, if the urea is higher than creatinine then think pre-renal cause.

Eg if creatinine was 123 umol/L and urea was 16.1mmol/L.
16.1 > 12.3 so consider pre-renal disease.

Pre-renal - something causes ↓ BP

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Diuretics
  • Haemorrhage
  • Burns
  • Renal Artery Stenosis

Intrinsic - something within the kidney

Post-renal

  • Kidney stones
  • Tumours
  • Retroperitoneal fibrosis
