Mechanism

↑ GABA content of the brain - inhibits GABA re-uptake

Typical Dose 600mg daily in 1-2 divided doses
Indications All forms of epilepsy
Contra-indications
  • Hepatic dysfunction
  • Porphyria
Side-effects

 Common: N&V, weight gain

Rarely: hepatic failure, pancreatitis, blood dyscrasia, sedation, transient hair loss

Interactions

Neuroleptics: decreased effects of Na valproate

TCA: ↓ anticonvulsant effects of Na valproate
