ALPHA
In pregnancy
- Infectious diseases - Hep B, HIV and syphilis
- Down's syndrome, Patau's syndrome, Edwards' syndrome
- Sickle cell and thalassaemia
- 20 week scan - physical development of baby
- Diabetic eye screening if pregnant with T1 or T2 DM
Newborns
- Physical exam - eyes, heart, hips, testes
- Hearing test
- Blood spot test - sickle cell, cystic fibrosis, congenital hypothyroidism, inborn errors of metabolism, severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)
Diabetic eye screen
From the age of 12 all people with diabetes are offered an annual diabetic eye check for early signs of diabetic retinopathy
Cervical screening
Offered to all women aged 25 to 64 to check for HPV
- Every 3 years aged 25-49
- Every 5 years 50-64
- Women with HIV are screened anually
- Women over 65 may request a smear if that have not had one since 50
- Immunocompromised women may have additional smears
- Pregnant women due a routine smear should wait until 12 weeks post partum
Aim to pickup precancerous changes in the epithelial cells. Involves a cervical smear test. Other infections such as bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis and trichomoniasis may be identified
- If inadequate sample - repeat smear after at least 3 months
- If positive with normal cytology - repeat the screen after 12 months
- If positive with abnormal cytology - refer for colposcopy
Breast screening
Offered to women aged 50-70 to detect early signs of breast cancer. Women over 70 can self-refer. Some areas are trialing 47 as the start of the screen.
Bowel cancer screening
Everyone aged 60-75 is offered a bowel cancer screening home kit every 2 years. Over 75 y/os can request a kit every 2 years by phoning a helpline
AAA screening
- Offered to men when they turn 65 once.
- Men over 65 can self refer if they have not had one before.
- Less than 3cm means its not enlarged.
- 3-4.4cm have a scan every year to check its size.
- 4.5 to 5.4 have a scan every 3 months.
- Larger than 5.5 will be referred to surgery within 2 weeks
