Drug Class Anaerobic antimicrobial
Mechanism
  • Broken down to toxic compounds within microbes with anaerobic/microaerophillic metabolism
  • Toxic compounds kill microbes by interfering with nucleic acid function and synthesis
Typical Dose 400mg TDS
Indications
  • Anaerobic protozoal infections 
  • Dental infections
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication
  • Rosacea
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Foot infection
  • etc etc
Contra-indications

Caution: pregnancy, breastfeeding, hepatic impairment

Avoid exposure to strong sunlight/UV

Side-effects

Dry mouth, myalgia, nausea, oral disorders, metallic taste

Interactions

Alcohol: causes disulfiram-like reaction (flushing abdo pain hypotension). Must be avoided 

Warfarin & Phenytoin: increased plasma conc 

Elimination  
Additional Notes Therapeutic monitoring for course >10 days. Commonly used to treat dental infections
