Maturity-onset diabetes of the young refers to any of several hereditary forms of diabetes mellitus caused by mutations in an autosomal dominant gene disrupting insulin production.
- Usually strong family history as autosomal dominant unless de novo mutation
- Typically non-obese and have normal or low body mass index (BMI)
- Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and can be effective in some types of MODY
- Individuals with MODY generally have some endogenous insulin production preventing DKA under most circumstances
