Liver failure

• Development of coagulopathy INR >1.5 
• Encephalopathy
• May occur suddenly in the previously healthy liver

Hyper Acute	<7 day onset
Acute	8-21 days
Subacute	4-26 weeks

Anything that harms the liver can cause liver failure and associated symptoms - jaundice, hepatic encephalopathy, asterixis etc

Commonest causes:

• Acute viral hepatitis
• Acute paracetamol overdose
