Drug Class Sulphonylurea
Mechanism
  • Stimulates insulin production in pancreatic β cells - therefore only effective when some β cell activity is present
  • Causes depolarisation and insulin release
  • Also inhibits gluconeogenesis
Typical Dose 40-80mg 
Indications
  • Type II diabetes
Contra-indications
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Pregnancy/breast feeding
  • Caution in those susceptible to hypos
Side-effects
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Weight gain
  • Rarely: bone marrow suppression
