Drug Class Beta blocker
Mechanism
  • Acts on β1 receptors in the heart
  • ↓ HR and force of contraction - ↓ work load
  • ↓ rennin production by kidneys - anti-HNT
  • ↓ conduction/AP initiation in heart - anti-arrhythmic effect
Typical Dose 25-100mg OD
Indications
  • HTN
  • Angina
  • Supraventricular dysrhythmias
  • MI prophylaxis
  • Migraine prophylaxis
Contra-indications Asthma, HF, 2nd/3rd degree heart block, bradycardia, COPD
Side-effects
  • Lethargy
  • Bradycardia
  • AV block
Interactions

Do not use with diltiazem or verapamil (CCBs) as increased risk of bradycardia - use an α blocker instead

Insulin - masks symptoms of hypoglycaemia

Elimination 50% urine 50% faeces
Additional Notes Atenolol selective for β1 receptors except in high doses
