Antibiotics in Pharyngitis

evan April 12, 2024
  • Ampicillin and amoxicillin should be avoided in patients with pharyngitis when glandular fever is considered a possibility as it may cause a maculopapular rash due to the glandular fever, which may be mistaken for an allergic reaction

  • Antibiotic treatment is not routinely indicated for pharyngitis and glandular fever.

  • Phenoxymethylpenicillin (penicillin V) may substitute amoxicillin/ampicillin in cases when antibiotic therapy is desired.
