Acute myeloid leukaemia

Accumulation and proliferation of immature myeloid cells

• Median presenting age 69
• Features of bone marrow failure (anaemia, severe opportunistic infections, easy bruising and haemorrhage (thrombocytopenia)), fatigue, gum hypertrophy
• NPM-1 good FLT3-ITD bad
• Treatment with intensive chemo, then bone marrow transplant in vunerable, then FLT3 receptor inhibitors

Complications include:

• Bleeding
• Neutropenic sepsis - from chemo, broad spec antibiotics

Poor overall prognosis and worsens with age. Most common type in adults
